Biography
Ventsislav Harkov is a Bulgarian cellist whose artistic career has developed across several of Europe’s major musical centres, as well as through professional engagements in Asia. Based in northern Germany, he combines an active career as an orchestral and chamber musician with his work as a cello teacher.
Harkov, coming from a musical family, began his musical education at the National School of Music in Burgas, Bulgaria, where he studied cello from 1998 to 2009 under the guidance of Radka Djagarova. His formative years were marked by success at both national and international competitions, including First Prizes at the International Competition for German and Austrian Music in Burgas and the International Competition “Young Virtuosos” in Sofia. His early development was supported by scholarships and awards from the American Foundation for Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture.
In 2009, Harkov moved to London to study under Stefan Popov at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. As a Guildhall scholarship recipient, he completed a Bachelor of Music with Honours and Performance Certificate. During his studies, he gained orchestral experience with the Guildhall School Symphony Orchestra, Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, and London Arts Orchestra, while developing a broad musical perspective within the vibrant cultural environment of London.
His subsequent studies and professional engagements continued to broaden his artistic horizons. He studied at the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien under Georg Baitch and later completed a Master of Music at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen studying under Alexander Baillie. His professional work has taken him across Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, and China, with orchestral engagements including the Kammerphilharmonie Köln, Städtisches Orchester Delmenhorst, Sofia Sinfonietta, Wiener Ensemble, and Guiyang Symphony Orchestra.
Chamber music forms another important part of Harkov’s musical activities. During his time in Bremen, he was a member of the D.U.R. Quartett, further developing his interest in the distinctive musical dialogue and close collaboration that define chamber music.
Alongside his performance career, Harkov has established himself as a dedicated cello teacher. He currently teaches at music schools and educational institutions in northern Germany, working with students of different ages and levels. His teaching is grounded in the classical tradition while remaining attentive to the individuality of each student, with an emphasis on developing a secure technical foundation, a refined musical sensibility, and an understanding of the repertoire.
Harkov’s artistic path reflects a distinctly international musical education, shaped by the traditions of Bulgaria, the cultural heritage of London and Vienna, and his professional experience in Germany and beyond. Today, he continues to pursue a versatile musical career, bringing together performance, chamber music, and teaching with a commitment to musical craftsmanship and continued artistic development.
